First Broken Bone

Remember the Skip It?? Well they have changed the way they were made when I was a kid....now they have a rubber ball on the end.

Well one afternoon Dani was playing with it in the driveway and it bounced on the ground and popped up and hit her on the top of the foot. She immediately started crying hysterically!!

So I told her to go sit on the couch and we put some ice on it. She maintained her crying for about 30 minutes. At first we thought it was just bruised and probably just hurt worse b/c the previous day Brooks had run over her foot with a little car.....

We told her just to be tough and walk on it some because it would help stretch it out and make it feel better. She even decided she wanted to go to church that night and so she did and just hobbled around on her foot all night.

Then the next morning she woke up and it looked like this.....

Josh said it was probably best to get it X-rayed. So on our way to school that morning we stopped by the Lane After Hours clinic to get a quick X-ray.

And we waited for the results....

Which came back that she had in fact BROKEN her foot on a SKIP IT!!!!!

They put a temporary splint on her foot until we could get an appointment with the orthopaedic Dr. later that day.

She really loved her hott pink temporary cast!!! No REALLY she was actually way too excited about it. I wasn't sure if it was more that she was right that it was broken even though we told her to get over her pain and be tough the day before or if she was oddly excited about her first broken bone...but either way, she was more excited than in pain!!

Then it was time for the Orthopaedic appointment....

They confirmed that her right foot was broken at the 5th metatarsal base bone. Dr. Whatley said that is was actually the "best" bone to break if she had to break one because it heals quickly and is generally not very painful.

Then she got the bad news...they had to take her "cute" hott pink cast off and replaced it with what is called a " hard soled shoe boot"!!! This was necessary because the particular bone that she broke needs to have movement to heal correctly.

See this face below....it is complete disappointment and embarrassment!!! Oh how quickly the excitement of her first broken bone went from awesome to HORRIBLE!!! In her words "this is going to ruin my reputation"!!!

She was terribly upset for a couple of hours after we got home. Her hope was to get another pink cast that all of her friends could decorate and sign and when she wound up with this "shoe boot" her whole idea of having a broken bone being "fun" was destroyed!! She cried for a while about many different issues from how she was never going to come out of her room to this shoe made her feel ugly and people were going to be so mean to her and not want to be her friend!!

So we had a "come to Jesus" talk for a while about how there are much bigger things in the world to be upset about and how lucky she was that she didn't have to have surgery and she could actually take a shower and get her foot wet and itch her leg whenever she wanted. We also had to discuss that what people think DOESN'T matter and the ONLY person whose opinion matters in this life is God's. It was a great talk and eventually a bonding moment for us....

She eventually came around!! Whew!! We decided we were going to have to bedazzle the boot shoe though because it just wasn't stylish enough...SO....

This was our finished product.....

And once we got done somehow the "shoe boot" turned into the coolest "shoe boot" there ever was and I almost think she was excited to show it off at school!!

She will have to wear the boot for about a month and hopefully she can go back to normal activity!!

Hopefully there is not a "next time" with this post.....
